A Living Piece of American History

Roebling Point began its transformation in the 1860s when German-American engineer John A. Roebling designed and built the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge (opened 1867). At 1,057 feet, it was then the longest suspension bridge in the world and served as the prototype for the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge foot on the Kentucky side quickly became Covington's original commercial hub, bustling with river commerce, warehouses, and residences.

By the early 1900s the neighborhood, now part of the larger Licking-Riverside Historic District was home to prominent families, river captains, and industrial leaders. Streets like Greenup, Garrard, and Riverside Drive showcase every major American architectural style from 1815–1920: Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne, and Craftsman bungalows. The Thomas Carneal House (1815), Covington's first brick home with a secret river tunnel, still stands as a proud landmark.

Today the district thrives with 150+ historic structures, 6.8 miles of sidewalks, and a 73 Walk Score. Floodwall murals by Robert Dafford vividly recount Covington's story, including the 1937 flood that tested but never broke the community's spirit.

The name honors the bridge and the point where the Licking meets the Ohio, the literal and symbolic gateway between Kentucky and Ohio.

The bridge itself and several homes (including Dan Beard's) are National Historic Landmarks. The entire district was added to the National Register in 1975.

Fun fact: Residents can still walk the same riverbanks that inspired generations of explorers and visionaries.

The area's revival accelerated in 2007 with The Ascent at Roebling's Bridge, a striking Daniel Libeskind-designed luxury condo tower. Since then, adaptive reuse projects like The Hayden (133 luxury units inside the former Kenton County Administration Building) and Roebling Row (modern 1- & 2-bedroom apartments at 240 Greenup St. by Towne Properties) have brought hundreds of new residents. The result? A perfect mix of preserved heritage and contemporary comfort, exactly what today's discerning residents crave.

Legendary Past Residents • Dan Beard & More

One of the most celebrated former residents is Daniel Carter "Dan" Beard (1850–1941). At age 11 his family moved to 322 East Third Street — now a National Historic Landmark in the Riverside Drive Historic District, just blocks from Roebling Point. Young Dan explored the Ohio River banks and Banklick Creek, forming the "Boone Scouts" with friends. Those boyhood adventures directly inspired the Sons of Daniel Boone (founded 1905 in Covington), which merged into the Boy Scouts of America. Beard later served as National Scout Commissioner until his death; President Franklin D. Roosevelt was a pallbearer at his funeral. A life-size statue of "Uncle Dan" greets visitors outside his boyhood home today, and the nearby Daniel Carter Beard Bridge honors his legacy. Living here means walking in the footsteps of an American icon who taught millions the values of outdoor adventure and civic duty.

Other early residents included river merchants, artists, and civic leaders whose mansions still grace the streets, reminding modern homeowners of the district's enduring prestige.
